I would like to get there some day but for now (and the past 40 yrs) shaving is just something that my job requires. Like dress slacks and dress shirt. I don't particularly enjoy it and I don't shave on weekends (unless testing a hone job) or when we are on vacation.
I want it quick, clean, and to last as long as possible. I do enjoy using a variety of different razors though and recently got into soaps besides Williams. I may get where some of you guys are soon.
I've grown a beard a couple of times and... I need to keep shaving

2 pass shave for me is more than sufficient. I guess I could make it a one pass if I do ATG on some areas from the get go. I guess I just fell into the 2 pass shave after many 3 pass shaves that I found to be a bit unnecessary. 2 for me just seems ideal.

Thanked: 56I must still have a lot to learn. I usually do a three pass shave because I can see that my shave isn't great after just two. I could skip the middle pass, probably, but that means a greater risk of irritation during ATG. The only time I'll stick with two passes is when shaving again in less than 24 hours, because my face lets me know it isn't appreciated.
Perhaps growth rates and color of hair makes a difference? I have dark hair and fairly light skin, so any growth is clearly visible, and by the end of the day, I can feel stubble. I can't shave at night because I'd have 5:00 shadow when I get up in the morning, so I'd have to shave again anyway.

Me too, I guess I tried dropping the third just to get a few extra minutes in bed. Now it's all I need. Sometimes I might do three on a weekend just for the pampering and quiet time in the bathroom before facing the day.
The single pass though... That means even longer in bed, I am not sure I could get away with it at work though. I usually have 5 o'clock shadow by 3 o'clockFact: Opinions are not the same as facts... Well, that's my opinion anyway

I imagine you certainly can get it down to an acceptable one pass shave. If you focus on working out your growth patterns and trouble spots with selective strokes I'm sure you can improve the outcome. It will take a bit of practice and experimentation. I personally wouldn't stress myself out trying to achieve this but If you really want to go for it.

I could certainly get an acceptable shave in one pass, but I still do three with a touchup, because of the growth pattern on my beard, and simply because I choose to. I know some do not care for that, but since it's my face, I do it anyway!

Shaving whit a Straight is to my opinion a from of Art, The more you use it The better it Gets. This week i finaly found a way to do 2 pass to get a great shave, 1 pass WTG, 2 ATG neck and cheek and ACTG on The Chin and moustache area DGS

Interesting. Straight Shaving I can only come near to the idea of a "one pass shave' if I use a Feather Straight(or a clone) with a ProGuard Blade.
DE shaving I can accomplish a very nice one pass shave only if I Dry Shave and I am able to see the beard.

similar for me 1 pass WTG then part pass across the grain rather than against the grain less irritation, I can go against the grain with a DE but only certain razors with certain blades to avoid irritation,
Day one its just a shave then it should evolve into your shave.
