I think with a straight it is more the enjoyment of doing it. There isn't anything to clog, so in all reality could just do the ATG. I am a night shaver, so time is almost never an issue.

I didn't even attempt ATG for the first 6-7 months. Granted I wasn't SR shaving but 2-3 days a week (that time constraint thing). I still just go 2 stokes on my neck. The ATG everywhere else isn't BBS yet, but it's getting better every week.
I'm happy with how my technique is starting to get dialed in, and I know I've got a ways to go...but Man O Man am I loving the journey!

So, I did not shave on my two days off and had a nice thick growth to remove. Chose my 5/8 Aust as I really like to listen to it popping hairs on a thick beard. Another two pass, little better than DFS shave. Think I will be saving my four pass shaves for special events and just doing a daily two pass.
Did the four pass for over two years and never really considered doing less, until now.

For me it's 2 pass on cheeks and neck and a third on the mustache and chin area, 1 wtg cheeks and neck, 1 ATG cheeks and neck, 1 wtg on the mustache and chin area, 1 XTG mustache and chin and 1 Across the grain mustache and chin area.

yeh same here, my usual work shaves (3 times a week) are a 2 pass with no problems, I only go the extra pass to touch up the Neck hollows for special occasions
Saved,
to shave another day.

I shave every other day and it's always a two pass.
When I started out I tried three and four pass routines but the extra passes and irritation simply was not worth the minuscule improvement in the shave. Additionally, over the years I've gotten better with the two pass routine. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

I use a disposable when I have to be in a hurry, like people coming over in 1/2 hour to visit or ? (only) other then being quick I always enjoy the whole process of shaving with a straight razor, stropping, lather mixing, shave, clean-up, re-strop razor before oiling and putting away.
I only do a 3 pass shave when shaving with a straight, way I learned, way I do.Last edited by pundi6446; 03-24-2017 at 11:37 PM.

Thanked: 4826I can have a quick one pass against the grain shave with my straight in less than 20 minutes start to finish and would take that one a disposable razor shave hands down any day. After I had shaved for some time with a straight I was on my regular 21 day shift at work and I dinked my razor on the faucet and had no other razor and no hones with me. I though I will just grab a disposable to shave once or twice before the end of my shift. I figured I had learned so much about shaving in general since my last shave with such a device, it should be much better than I remember. It was awful. I swore not another disposable shave, ever.

I do a north to south pass, then a south to north pass. I pay no attention to beard direction when straight shaving. When DE shaving, I play by the rules and begin with a WTG pass. No matter what implement used, I only do a downward pass on the moustache area. My straight shaves are as quick or quicker than my DE shaves.
