Thread: New to group

Just joined the group and excited to find a group of like minded people to discuss blades. Live in the south central Illinois, US.
Been using replaceable blade SR for years . Tried to hone a old razor several times with no luck. See now why. Had no idea of the super fine grit needed to do this.

Welcome to the forum! glad to see you're getting into honing your own blades. It's rewarding but there's definitely a learning curve involved. Don't get discouraged and know we're here for questions.
In the meantime definitely look at the library here. It's a wealth of information from members far more knowledgeable than myself.

It's not just the grit, you will find its experience,, most new guys just hone away thinking its a knife, then they don't have the bevel set and keep going up thru the grits just polishing an edge that ain't there yet. I know some guys can get a better edge with a6k stone than most new guys can with a 12k. But with enough practice you,ll get it one day.

Also remember, that's really not as important as knowing how to shave well, plus now your stropping comes into the mix, which is the most important aspect of maintaining your edge, so learn to shave with a properly honed edge( here's where it's good to have a pro do it) and learn to STROP . Good luck and put your location in your profile instead of hiding out like your in witness protection. There may be someone down the street ready to help you with the honing part. Tc

Learning to hone takes time and also the right hones for the job. See if you can find a member close to you for some hands on honing lessons, it will save you a great deal frustration in the long run.

Hello and welcome, TC is correct, honing is experience. It is experience, patience, skill, common sense and yes equipment. You do not need tons of stones and the latest greatest natural stone to make a great edge. The right person with a mediocre stone can make a great edge, so do your research and ask before you dump tons of money into that rabbit hole. There will be many answers but a lot of choosing the right stones depends on what your end goal will be, and budget. After that you can go nuts with different rocks

Welcome to SRP. Work on learning to shave with a real straight and how to properly strop should be the first things you need to learn.
Some folks jump right into honing but believe me, it makes for a long time in learning and lots just get frustrated trying to shave with a razor they honed improperly. Read the library and ask all the questions you want. We are glad to have you as part of the group.
