Thanked: 7FINALLY! I figured out how to go against grain on neck.
Ugh....how I wish my neck hairs grew straight down....anyway I finally figured out against grain shaving there. I used a butter knife to practice a bit and after the initial up and down strokes I put the razor in opposite hand and made a down stroke towards the opposite side.
So right side neck: left hand, start at chin, down but curve towards middle of neck. No cuts, did fine. Ditto for left side neck: right hand, start at chin, down but curve towards left shoulder.
Right neck baby bottom smooth, left neck close but not perfect. Practice will continue.

I have to do mine like that, but opposite direction. Ear to base of throat. Then from side of neck to the chin.
I call it a X stroke.

For some reason, I have a very, very sensitive section around my vocal cords and I shave that section carefully with a disposable. For the rest of my neck, it's shave up, against the grain and second pass shave down, with the grain. The end result is more than presentable.

Thanked: 23Wish that was all I had to do to get mine. My neck hairs go sideways in a couple of spots. I can get baby smooth on the cheeks, but even with multiple passes every which way I can never get the same on my neck. Steel wire tough red hair doesn't help maters either.

What I did was faceturbate on the way to work and think which direction I would have to go to get that on a 3rd pass. If you can remember, work that way next shave!
Before long, it will become habit.

ATG as far as I remember is, you got the hands correct Angles, but you start at the neck and go up towards the jaw line.
I think what you're describing and Outback is demonstrating is more a XTG or a scything stroke.
Here's a video of a pro, this is the video that got me into straight razor shaving, he used to be a member here as well.
6 years on, and I still love this video. When I saw the title, I thought at first he was going to shave with the butcher knife in the rack on the kitchen wall....:-)
I also learned a lot from watching this video a few hundred times when I started.
Behold the Master....his second pass, on the neck that's against the grain, and then when he lather up the second time, that's all ATG and XTG.

Thanked: 3225Gotta love it, a cut to the chase no BS shave. No fancy gear or posh shave den either.
