I always went ATG when learning - a mistake I think. I recently changed my routine to finish with a 3/4 grain pass which worked much bett with less ingrown hairs

for fighting the nasty bumps and ingrowns certain methods seem to work for many.
Electrics not a BBS hence less ingrowns. Of course if you force a BBS with an electric say hello to ingrowns and electric razor burn....ouch!
multi-blade razors say hello to mister trash can...
Safety razors are possibly the most suggested, though that might be the old answer.
No shaving against the grain...we don't want that hair going below the skin.....

I don't think I've ever actually managed to give myself ingrowns with a str8, no matter how ham-fisted my initial attempts (and some have been!); just cuts and razor burn! Now those multi-bladed things, on the other hand...

ATG
I absolutely have to go ATG on my neck. My hair grows down and so in order to get even a decent shave, it takes 3 passes, 2 WTG and 1 ATG. I dont get any ingrown hairs , but I can get some irritation if I dont keep my head in the game. I think after time, your face will adjust to whatever you do. I also dont really believe there is any other way to get BBS without going ATG.

I think it depends. On my cheeks and chin it is easy to get BBS with a WTG pass but on my neck it is very difficult. I think it depends on how flat the hair grows to the skin.
On my cheeks the hair grows straight out almost, but on the neck my hair grows very flat and tends to grow back under the skin no matter how much I try when I go ATG - which is the only way I can get BBS there
