I'm having some trouble with this line of thinking. Use it up and throw it out? Then why use a straight at all when you can do that with a 29 cent plastic razor? There's a reason we don't call straight razors "disposables." As for a razor being a thing of beauty as well as well as something that serves a purpose -- why not? Everything we use from our furniture to our clothes, to our cars has a certain look and it's in the nature of man to try to combine form and function. Look at the tools, weapons, jewelry and dwellings of the Celts and other ancient peoples. They hang in museums today as art. Let's face it, if appearance doesn't matter, why bother to shave at all?

Or grow a beard - the true remedy for the cheap. Trimming can be done by holding the beard on a rock and striking the captured hair with another rock. Very, very green. No cost, no CO2. (Hmm, that makes me wonder why the good Mr. Gore is clean shaven, but that's another question for another thread

As a cheapskate, I feel I can answer this question with easy confidence: Straights are sharper and lost longer

Even if a straight is honed daily, the $10 razor spent on ebay still easily outlasts 5 weeks ($10 worth of dull plastics).

Not necessarily, I found it very difficult to find a decent job with my scraggly beard.

I love this thread, some people can relate, and others are turned upside-down by the 11 heretical theses.
