I have one of the most expensive Phillips models out there, and it does shave your face, but the way it does it isn't very great or close. You really have to work it to get a close shave, and it does give quite a lot of irritation, not like razor burn in terms of pain, more like really working some body-scrub into your face. I rarely use it, but I've noticed that as your beard gets coarser the shave is less uncomfortable since it actually starts cutting instead of pulling out the hairs (which is what gives you that redness). My father has used the same electric for several decades, and it's still going strong and he gets a good shave out of it. I think they are a better alternative than disposables and cartridges, but not better than DE's or straights. They are damn nifty for travel though, just remember to shave before you shower, the hairpulling gets worse if your beard is softened by water.

The beard trimmer on the back of it is excellent though, really good for trimming my beard and other hairy parts...
