I think here that the keen edge and thick hair is the key, along with insensitive skin (or indifference to pain... ). Still, I might be wrong as I've never done it with a straight, only with new Mach3's, so still YMMV...

I know no one will like this one...

I have done it many times... sharp edge, good prep, blade flat on the face, gently glide the blade against the grain. Nothing let for the WTG pass... and no irritation.

It takes practice... but it works.

I have found that if I am going to do an ATG pass on my neck I'm best off to do it first. If I do WTG and XTG first,I get wicked irritation in that area.Like the others, good prep, sooper sharp blade, and I get my best shaves this way.

I do it from time to time just to add variety to my shaves
One has to be more careful, but there is nothing wrong with it.
I'm sure not to do it when my stubble is 3 days old, but after 24 hours it works, again - if I feel like it.

I have not been able to shave against the grain with my first pass anywhere on my face or neck without extreme difficulty
(well, besides cleaning up my hairline on the other side)
Find me on SRP's official chat in ##srp on Freenode. Link is at top of SRP's homepage

This has become a very interesting thread.
There seems a much bigger variety in what people can and can't do on the field of shaving passes and directions, than I originally thought.

You learn something every day on SRP.

Yeah, I thought I was wicked for starting of with an ATG sweep which is so against the rules, and now it turns out half the board does it...

I'd rather get farted on dining at the Y than go atg first. For those that do I'm impressed and awed at your ability.

If it has only been one day since the last BBS shave, yup, I do one pass ATG, then clean up non-BBS areas, and call it a day. A good alum block rub down keeps the redness and burn at bay. I've done this with a DE safety razor quite a bit, but only just started doing it with the straight. Tabac is the only thing in my small arsenal that gives me enough lube to do it without problems. The Penhaligon's cream gets here tomorrow, so we'll see if it's up to the task. I have to pull the skin extra tight, too.
