Anyone ever tried to start of with an ATG stroke?
I normally do with my Mach3, never tried it with a straight, but at least with the mach3 it's not terribly bad, it works just fine without any burn...

Thanked: 278I've never tried starting ATG with any type of razor, I think my beard is too tough. In any case I would think a WTG pass would still be needed, and if you are going to do that it makes sense to do the ATG pass last.
Are you saying a single ATG pass does all you need? If so I envy you.

Thanked: 1212I have. It didn't work for me.
If I shave a three day beard WTG, it reduces the whiskers to a length that resembles something like slightly over half a day of growth. So I figured that, whenever I shaved a less than 24 hours stubble, that I might as I well start out ATG. For some reason, it did not work that way. The result was bad and I ended up irritating my skin pretty badly.
I didn't try it again. In the end, I realized I like shaving too much to figure out how to skip a pass.
Bart.

I can do it on the parts of my face with sparse growth. Wouldn't be fun on the fuller beard.

Thanked: 174I've tried it but it was uncomfortable. I don't understand why but why fight it.

Well, it takes care of most of my face, then I usually have to go over some rough spots at another angle (like on a little piece of my neck where my beard grows at a 90degree angle to the rest of my beard). But still I usually don't get it all, and have to do a couple of passes. Mind you this is with a Mach3, and I like to change the blades on it very often, after 2 or three shaves (after that the ATG pass starts to feel like shaving with a cheese-grater)

Thanked: 13245Oh boy you guys are not going to like my answer.....
Yes, I start with an ATG pass on my neck (the most sensative spot on my face) every single time I test shave a razor, before sending it back to the owner... I consider it the hardest part of the test shaves, if the razor hangs up, sticks, skips, stutters or even hiccups, on that pass it is NOT sharp enough....
Now on my everyday shaves with my personal razor, heck no I do the normal WTG, XTG, and then if I really want a close shave ATG but rarely...

Thanked: 271-pass ATG works for me, and I have very thick hair. The key for me is to make sure that the blade is really sharp and use an extreme angle. My skin is not overly sensitive so your mileage may vary.

I agree with GSSixgun, for me-that IS THE TEST-for a true shave ready razor. I rarely, if ever get razor burn anywhere on my face.
My usual shave starts with my left hand (non-dominant) hand with upstrokes on the right side of my neck. I can tell as soon as the razor touches my skin, if it is truly ready for the shave.
This is not to say that a thorough pre-shave prep isn't an important part of the shave- but for me ATG absolutely requires a KEEN edge. After the right side with my left hand , I go to ATG on my left neck-then go to my cheeks, finishing with WTG on my neck with only water.
