Thanked: 17Blade Areas ....
Glad to back prowling SRP once again!!!
A note to some newbies......please remember to percieve your razor's blade as having distinct 'areas', each of which might work well when isolated on one part of your face.
I try to utilize the 'center' of the blade on my cheeks, the 'heel' (last 1/3) when shaving my jawline, and the 'tip' when dealing with my heavily creased chin area. This has given me the approach needed to avoid nicks and get a really close shave! It also has switched me from using rounded point razors more over to the squarepoints, spike points and modified French Points.
Bond with your blades!

Thanked: 17Just remember that straight shaving contol is a lot more than just blade area .... blade control also infers a real sense of how tightly you are holding it (loose is better!), changing the blade's angle to the face for different facial areas (important!), as well as utilizing different parts of the blade's edge during the shave.
You will eventually work-out (over time, and a bunch-o-shaves) the pattern combinations of all those things that work for YOUR face!

Your tips are much appreciated and will be applied as soon as I hone my razor, in about a month or so. That's how long it's gonna take for the hones that I ordered to get here. This thing couldn't even cut butter lol.

You need a topic called Zen and the Art of Shaving!
Glad you're back and hoping all is well.

Thanked: 17Thanks, John! Things are stable, which is good right now.
There truly is a very Zen-like quality to straight shaving, requiring a unique and close bond with the implements and the process. A really good shave for me leaves me with a calm feeling of accomplishment, where I have interfaced with the tools in a balanced way that allowed for the good, close, and safe shave.
Straight shaving to me is all about the balances necessary for success.
There is a Zen, and there is an Art.

I use the tip of the blade to cut my ears; the heel to cut the skin between my lower lip and chin; and finally, the middle of the blade to cut anywhere and everywhere else.

Thanked: 4Now why does that sound like a recipe for pink sink?
Chaaaz: I find that shaving with a str8 is an experience in it's own. All other shaves are just a means to an end, while a str8 shave is a definite counterpoint to a mundane day.
