Thanked: 0Thanks for the responses fellas. Obie thank you, that is exactly what I was looking for!! I have just tried a shave oil I found here locally called Shave Deluxe, it smells good, feels good and not too oily. I was hoping that I could get some hands on answers such as yours to see if I wanted to try some other brand.
However, I started looking into what Ronnie Brown had been doing and thought I would give that a try first. I found some essential oil and some sweet almond oil, although I am not sure of the ratio yet but I will experiment a lttle and see how it goes.
I'm with you on the olive oil thing, it may work good but all I could think about was a salad
Thanks
Wook

Thanked: 25I second the Truefitt and Hill. I really enjoy that pre-shave oil and it has a nice scent too! It is worth trying. I also have the castle forbes water based and it is not as inspiring. If you write Truefitt and Hill and request samples they will send you some so you can try before buying!

I am not a big fan of pre-shave oils but I have tried 3 pre-shave oils as well as the Proraso pre/post shave cream
Truefitt and Hill, light oil sort of citrus scent, about $30 a bottle
Art Of Shaving, very heavy oil available in a few different scents, about $22 a bottle
American Crew essential shave oil, somewhere in the middle as far as how it feels on the face heavier then T&H but no where near as bad as AOS has sort of a smell of cloves and maybe a little mint, also the cheapest at about $15 a bottle
On any of the above 3 a little dime size amount is usually sufficent so a bottle usually can last a long time, just make sure to wash and dry your hands very thoroughly before handling a straight razor as they are all very slick, some guys don't like the way they leave a residue in there brush after lathering on top of the oil but while I have noticed the oily feel in the brush it did rinse out on it's own when I stopped using said oil with whatever brush
The Proraso pre/post shave cream seems to have a nice cooling effect from the menthol in it but I can't see or feel where it does too much either but on a hot day it does goes very well with Proraso shave cream of course and it makes for a very nice mentholated and cooling shave

Thanked: 121My suggestion (for everybody)
I'm an oil believer. If you go to WalMart, women's lotions section, look for a pump bottle of "J.R. Watkins Apothecary Aloe and Green Tea Dry Oil Body Mist"
Why?
Unlike AOS and many others,
Top quality ingredients: Apricot Kernel Oil and Vit E and aloe and a light, clean scent.
The right thickness, will not clog razors or leave much scum in the sink.
Absorbs into the beard and skin, dry after a razor pass (stretching not a problem).
Pump bottle does not spill product on hands, counter, shaving apparatus.
Unlike T&H, CF, and many others,
Costs less than $5 for 4 oz.
Tell Wally I sent you. He'll sell you two bottles for under $10.
