Shaving in the shower
I had to try it and it was not nearly as good as I thought it would be. So; how do you do it properly? I didn't use a mirror and I only used soap but the shave was no where near the quality I usually get. I know it's taboo and not recommended, but, when I used a DE it was the only way to get a close shave. I, naturally, thought the same would follow with a straight.
I did make absolutely certain my blade was dry and oiled it just to be safe. Any suggestions?

Thanked: 2You still have the same number of toes (and other kinds of digits) that you did when you started?!?
Okay, maybe you're not nearly as clumsy as I am, but I used to be (pre-straight) a dedicated shower-shaver. But the minute I laid eyes on my first straight, I knew it would change. Visions of a severed femoral artery, or worse, a chipped razor, swam in my head.
I think that the real reason you get a better result with shower shaving with a DE or cartridge razor has more to do with lubrication than with the steam or anything like that. Before, were you wetshaving in the shower with your DE and a properly-built lather, or just smearing on some brushless option? I suspect that, in a steamy shower, you get a better shave than you do at the sink because the steam compensates for mediocre lather.
I know, at least, that I get a better shave now with good lather and a Bic disposable (don't ask, it was a very bad week) than I ever did with an M3 and shave cream that I smeared on with my hands.

Thanked: 335If you have to shave in the shower, use a plastic handled disposable with those little strips of stainless that pass for blades. When you drop them, little is lost. When a straight razor slides out of your soap lubricated fingers, if it falls to the shower base or tub, the least that will happen is that the blade will get get cracked or chipped. The worse that can happen is that you will try to catch the blade and cut yourself. Just imagine quickly closing your hand on your straight razor. Now how many tendons did you just slice? Not a fun thought and the reality is even less fun. You won't even worry about the rust when your fingers can't grasp the shank.
You need to shave where you can see what you are doing and where you can keep your hands dry so you can maintain control of the razor.

Thanked: 522SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
We've all heard the stories about dropping the soap in the shower. If you have deciced to walk on the wild side and shave in the shower with a str8, the best advice anyone could give you is "DON'T DROP THE RAZOR"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I shave in the shower because it really is the best prep I can get.
I mounted one of those scissor-type retractable mirrors near the shower and I use it to shave whilst in the shower.
I use some of the shave soap on the mirror to act as an anti-fog agent.
I've only dropped the blade once .. out of sheer clumsiness.
No problems, really .. except the blade recieved some nibbles on the edge ..
grrrr...
I never thought I could jump that high in the shower ... lol .

I would imagine the straight razor shaving in the shower would be a bit dangerous.

... renews my faith in Darwin's theory and thinning the gene pool ...
I mean really now. Take one look at these razor sharp monsters and who would not think "It would only take once ... " Personally I am always leaning my lower half into the sink cabinet and leaning forward over the sink to be close to the mirror while shaving. Only threat in a mistake there is the loss of a good blade to the sink (has never happened but then the risk here versus in the shower?!?). You can't be serious? Nothing personal but ... wow! ... in the shower!
