Found a local barbershop that does straight shaves
Hey guys, get this. I'm trying to get a proper pompadour haircut, right now I can get it coiffed but have to blow dry it up, I think the cut is part of the problem. in my search I find a shop in town, also advertises "traditional straight razor shaves".
I dropped by there, I like the place, small, one barber, lots of ink, in the case he has the pomades, a straight, hone and strop (I think for display). I grabbed their little flyer with phone number. *Special $20 haircut with face shave!!!!! I've gotta try this place out.
so I asked him, did he have to use the straight with the disposable blade or could I bring my own. he said,"do you have one?" a bit surprised, I just gave the faint smile and "yes". he said to bring it so he could check it out, I'm guessing he figures it isn't shave ready.
my question is this, I've never shaved with a disposable type straight, should I try that out or just take one of mine in and ask him to use it? He said something about being able to do both, but I'm not sure if that meant he could use my straight or that he had real straights too, I think that's probably not allowed in CA.
anyways, I'm very excited!! a barbershop shave and haircut for 20 bones! and the higher my hair has gotten the more compliments, I got three today at lunch!.

It's a bit of a dilemma. On first thought I didn't hesitate to think that I would want to bring my own. Then I thought "as long as the guy didn't screw it up somehow".
I'd compromise by bringing one of my own, but one that if it hit the floor and was toast, I wouldn't really care all that much.
Keep us posted and post pics of that haircut if you would.

I don't have any like that right now, about to send one off for honing, but all my shave ready ones right now are the nice ones I've been getting rescaled.
Really I need an Otto Deutsch to go with the haircut!! i am thinking about going over there now, but don't need another shave today. hmmm.........working tomorrow......

Seriously, I'd wait then or have him shave you with the Shavette.
If you did bring one of your best keepers with, I'd really hate to see you add to this post with some title like: "That %$^(($&$$$^$^$^$^$ totally ^*&%^%$'d up my razor!!!!!!"
In no way would I think you'd deserve such a fate, just being honest, part of me would think "You ran the risk".

Personally, I wouldn't go the disposable shavette route. I've read too many disappointing/horror stories to consider it. It might be a good shave, but it will most likely be less than you're looking for. Of course there are exceptions, and I am by no means stating a rule pertaining to disposable shaves.
I'd agree with the suggestion of taking one of your own that if "it wasn't ever the same after that shave," it wouldn't drive you to Sweeney Todd the barber instead.

I don't understand. You'll place the acreage between your ears and your Adam's apple in the hands of this barber, but you hesitate to let him handle your razor? If his hand is steady enough to trim your foliage, it should be steady enough not to drop your razor.

Depends on the razor that is brought, and what the experience of the barber is, I think. Can he maneuver a 4/8 as well as a 8/8? Will the blade size or grind give him problems -- holding & shaving?
Perhaps the option is to bring in a few, and let him get a feel for what he's comfortable with? Accidents do happen, though. Until you've go some experience and confidence with that particular barber, why risk a razor that may not be easily replaced?

I'm probably not qualified to really say as I've only been straight shaving for a few months, but when I went to speak to a barber at AOS about getting a straight shave, he seemed genuinely interested in talking about razors after I told him I used a straight. Granted I didn't go through with it as I didn't have time, but still.
If this barber wasn't interested in using your blade then I'm sure he would have said so at the start (feed you some "shop policy" or "legal reason" line). I figure that whatever shaves he does in a day get kinda boring with the same blade. It'd probably be the most enjoyable shave he's given at work because it's different.
This is gonna sound Princess Bride-ish, but he knows that you know how to use the razor. If I were that barber, I'd be thinking "I gotta make this one good." Plus you already have a topic of conversation!

Sounds like fun. I would go with what ever he uses. I'm sere he's very comfortable with it, witch will be safer for you. I know all my razors handle a little different.
