    Default Oh Wow moment

Several weeks ago I had an Oh Wow moment...

As I was rinsing my shaving brush I realized that I had no recollection of my just completed shave. In hindsight it might have been a senior moment, but at that time I thought it was pretty neat.
A bbs auto-shave! "Made it, Ma! Top of the world!" I have mastered the blade! It only took 3 1/2 years.
I was thinking of bragging, but then What good is the destination if you do not remember the journey?

Still reveling at my shaving prowess, Let us fast forward to last week...

Half-way through my shave I plink my self with the corner of a spike point. Oh Well, sometimes these things happen. I haven't nicked my self in several months. I am still Master of the Blade.

    Shave #2
My next shave I manged to remove an 1/8" square patch of skin from the point of my chin. It stings more than it bleeds. These things happen, but two shaves in a row? Not to me!
My shaving prowess is looking a little tenuous.

    Shave #3
I have shaken the dark cloud of my past two experiences. I know in my heart I will have a Great albeit cautious shave.

Shaving with great care I make the first pass beside my lip and
    (expletive deleted) IT HAPPENED AGAIN!
It looks like I have a 3/4" dueling scar. Thankfully it is shallow and shouldn't leave a mark.
Now I understand the mechanics of what happened: I high-sided the blade with too steep an angle while using a scything motion and no skin stretch, but this does nothing for my confidence and I have at least one more pass to make to be presentable. With my confidence shaken to the core I finished with no further injury. Phew!!

Today I used a Gillette de for the first time in over a year (gun shy of re-opening the wound) and had a decent shave. Hopefully the day after tomorrow I will back using a straight.

    Just Thought I Would Share

Thanks for the reminder that we shouldn't get overconfident and complacent. I'm tempted to put a band-aid on the mirror as a permanent warning to myself.

That sounds a lot like the blonde who used white out on her computer's screen.

I am proficient, but still work on refining my technique. I got a little cut last week, but it was minor and healed in two day. I will stay that this was with my nastiest straight disposable blade and it offers no forgiveness on its first shave.

Rotating this mean straight in with the rests keep me sharp.

Don't give up on your successes!

Thanks for sharing, Sean. One can always look
forward to those `Oh ***' moments (pick your
    word).

I had an opposite moment. Since my fingers are healing I had to go to an SE which are my favs next to straights and wedges.

First shave Schick SE ok some weepers nothing to cry about. Thought ok I still know how to use these handled thingys.

Next shave pulled out the English Gem. Tore me up. Lost a corner near my lower lip and looked like I substituted a cheese grater for the neck pass. I gave up in order to staunch the bleeding.

Yeah even if you are careful, those things still bite you in the butt.

MANY years ago, when I was learning to ride a motorcycle, my friend who was teaching me (and was quite a few years older than me) told me to expect two accidents: one in my first year of riding from inexperience, and one in my second year of riding from overconfidence. Survive those two and you will probably be fine for ever. He was right, and I see a parallel here.

    Now for the question...

Did you have those accidents because he told you it would happen or was it because of inexperience/over confidence?

Same with the razor. Did you nick yourself because you told yourself it could not happen?

yep, my pappy told me there are only two types of people who ride motorcycles. Those who have had accidents and those who are going to have them.
