Thanked: 0Re-initiating beginner - Sets available ?
Hello,
as a long-time (not so active myself) follower of the Yahoo-SRP, I would like to take the plunge again to try myself on straight razor shaving. Some 2 years ago I already did, with a razor kindly sent my David Uthed, but failed due to persistence (and patience) at that time. Unfortunately I shortly after sold all my straight razor related items, so I'm starting afresh, so to speak
As I saw that still some forum members kindly offer straight razors and even sets, I would like to ask here if somebody could offer me a beginner set containing the following: a decent-condition (not over-the-top) razor, preferably 5/8 or 6/8, in combination with a strop and if possible also a hone. All should be decent, but regarding the fact that I am still not sure if straight razor shaving is something for me I would rather have it not too expensive, not to excite my missus
Thanks for listening, the best wishes,
-Axel-

Hey Axel, welcome back. Be sure to check in the Gear for Sale area under User Gallery for things that might be listed; you might find what you need there. Also, check the Buy/Sell/Trade forum if you haven't already.
Just out of curiosity, what made you give up the first time? There were a few times early on where I almost left the fold, so to speak, but finally got a couple decent shaves, then some good ones and my excitement kept me in it even throught the rougher times. I am still not perfect everytime, but I kind of like the idea that the ideal shave awaits me every morning.
Hope you find what you need,

I still have three versions of my starter sets available. New razor, mug, brush and soap and either a hanging, 2 sided or 4 sided paddle strop. Prices range from $88.95 to $99.95.
Photos of the basic set are in the Gear For Sale Gallery.
Thanks,
Tony

Thanked: 0Hi Showme,
thanks for your comment - still shuffling through the great lot of information on this new SRP page.
With regard to the giving-up part: Well, I can get quite nice shaves out of my Merkur DE I use for everyday. I started SR in looking for the "perfect" shave. I had two decent razors, hones and strops and really got into it.
The razors were ok (hanging hair test no problem), but still I was not happy with what I got. At that time I had little time and a lot of stress, so in looking back not enough patience was the biggest issue. And as I unfortunately never got these "magic moments", where in spite of being a beginner everything falls into place, I had nothing to hold on to during my trials to keep me going.
So I stayed with my DE and out of frustration sold all SR items I got. Well, now, some time later, I stumbled back across the Yahoo place, found this page and was re-interested in mastering this art. This time with more patience (hopefully) and for sure with more determination
Long story, sorry if I got a bit carried away , the best wishes,
-axel-

Good story. I, too, once had the newbie troubles. Hell, I am still having them. I had them yesterday. I have come to the conclusion that I cannot sharpen a razor to shaving quality. Oh, I can cut arm hair, leg hair, cat hair (if I can catch a cat), hanging hair, and about any other hair than facial hair. (Explaining the scar on my ass to my wife was something else.)
But, I got a razor from Lynn yesterday. I shaved with it this morning and angels started singing. This razor shaved hair off like it was peach fuzz. And I was the one doing the shaving! This should keep me going for a little while; or until I have to hone another razor.
Hang in there; it does take time, but in the end it is worth it. If you like your Merkur, then keep it handy. The straight will come. Then you will be one of the few...the proud...the straight shavers.
