Thanked: 17A new twist ....
Dudez .... back from a long hiatus....
I had always been a fan or experimenting with various creams, soaps, etc while straight shaving, and recently tried something new. Rather than a shaving 'oil', either on the face, or mixed in soaps, I tried a cream skin moisturizer - Cetaphil - which is cheap, and recommended by Dermatologists to help moisturize and clear-up skin issues.
I applied a liberal dose - very liberal - to my face/beard by hand, and then used a Badger brush and good glycerine soap over the top of it. This was right after a shower, but NO hot towel.
Blade virtually "skated" over the skin, which had been plumped-up anyway from the moisturizer. Rather than laying on top of the skin/beard, this moisturizer soaks right into the skin and facial hair!
A wonderful discovery after a long layoff!

Good stuff! My wife has some of this in her bathroom and I've been wondering how this might work, I'll have to give it a try.

Thanked: 190Good Stuff
I use Castille Soap as my preshave because it has oils in it already. My Col Conk soaps lathers up nicely on top of it.
I like to hear or others who have found a good working combination like yours and mine.

Interesting. I'll have to try that.
I find that using Shave Secret before lathering helps avoid nicks.

Thanked: 363This is a variant of method shaving which I have experimented with for years.
My variant was preping the brush and face with Marseilles soap (pure olive oil) this created immense and dense cushion when used with a tallow or glycerin soap. The blade just glided over the skin.
It works well, but I don't like brush preping at 7:00am in the morning, so I just go for the standard cream or soap+cream combo.
cheers

Sounds like something to try. 30 years ago I would use regular soap then shaving cream with a old de razor. I am going to try a hydration cream or possibly a lotion to see how this works. Will post how it goes. Lotions rub in a lot easier than creams so I will start with that. My wife has eucerin lotion will give that a try.

Thanked: 0Cetaphil is great! I use it in the shower as part of my beard prep before shaving. Really does soften up the beard. Haven't tried it with actual shaving though. May give that a try sometime.
