Shaved with the non dominant hand finally !
Last night I finally was able to use my left hand to shave all of my left sideburn and cheek. I had read this post by dannywonderful here and his suggestion to practice holding the razor while watching tv was the thing that finally got me over the hump.
I took one of the razors in my to do box and held it in my left hand and found that without much difficulty I could hold it properly and manipulate it up against my cheek while in front of the computer. Doing this by feel without a mirror.
Last night I was shaving and started to go round to the left side with my dominant right hand and remembered the practice session. So I change hands and looked in the mirror and realized why I had failed in the past.
Looking in the mirror my brain was immediately confused in trying to find the angle to go up against my cheek. So I stopped looking and placed the razor against my cheek perfectly. Once there I looked in the mirror again and began short strokes in a down pass.
Piece of cake. I didn't go beyond the cheek left handed but went back to the dominant hand for the rest. So this was really a cool thing for me. An achievement in that I have tried to shave with the left a half dozen times but was always confused at the start when looking in the mirror and gave up.
I will begin practicing manipulating the razor around the neck and moving in different directions, XTG, ATG. A hearty thanks to dannywonderful for helping an old dog learn a new trick !Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I'm glad my suggestion helped! I'd only been shaving with a straight razor for about three weeks or so when I started using my left hand, so it wasn't as much of a jump for me.

well done! But if you take this long to do it..i can't imagine myself! When i pass to my left this starts to shake like i was doing a coctail or something! I have some nice techniques to shave with my right hand that are great for me! Im allways seeing wht im doing! It doesn't interfere with my line of vision! But i wish to be able to do that someday. I will practice too in front of my PC..have to be very discreet though! If not, someone will put me in a Psychiatric clinic thats for sure

Never had problems using my left hand WTG but at the same time, ATG has not been possible. Will take on board the advice on this and the other thread and give it another go. Thanks all.

Nice job, Jimmy. If you decide to stick with it, I
think you'll find you've just expanded your tool-
set of available angles and techniques.

Thanked: 293Nice job. I'm glad I had the advice to go ambidextrous come hell or high water when I started. Both hands were equally awkward and forced to progress together.
That said, the only pass where I do exactly symmetrical motions with each side's respective hand is my first North/South pass (i.e. left hand shaves left side of the face and vice versa). This is because my grain goes in all goofy directions and it so happens that for XTG/ATG the right hand is ideal for about 2/3's of those passes.
So, if you're lucky, you'll still get to use your dominant hand a little bit more than your other (I'm right-handed).
