Stupid ear...how did you get there?
Finishing off my first week of shaving with a straight razor without so much as a single problem. Tonight, I'm making the transition from the cheek to the neck right at the ear when the darn thing gets my ear like a lightsaber! At first it didn't bleed and I took a sigh of relief....two minutes later, I'm clearing the blood away and notice a 1/2" cut on the right earlobe....geesh.
Oh well, at least it didn't hurt as badly as some pocket knife mishaps I've had.
Here's the culprit:

Thanked: 1903Well, at least now you know what the recommended starter razor sports a round point Speaking from experience, I can assure you that there will be no scar though...
There are quite a few shaving videos on youtube, scattered across this forum, and there are also three in here: Shaving videos - Straight Razor Place Wiki. You might find it difficult at first to mind your angle, pressure, and the pass itself while trying to navigate around the ear. As with stropping and honing, I have found it useful to concentrate on the spine rather than the tip/edge.
Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress.
Regards,
Robin

It's interesting how little it hurts and how much it bleeds from a SHARP blade. It's part of the learning curve, and it's happened to most of us(not necessarily the ear,but cuts).I always think "a hundred years or so ago,EVERYONE shaved with a straight, even 14 year old boys".If they could get it down,so can I.

Ears bleed badly, but heal quick. You'll soon get the technique required to miss them completely, don't worry. Going against the grain under the nose, still learning that here. Can go for months and then, bam, not much blood, or scab/scar, but it irritates like hell.

Thanked: 155Ouch! Well, maybe. Ear lobes don't have many nerves so you may not have even felt it. Ear piercing is relatively painless for most.
