Thanked: 0Newbie stuff...
Hi there, I'm as new as they come, I don't even own a razor, haha. However, I've been interested in using a straight razor since I was 18 (I'm now 20) and I think I'm finally ready to take the plunge. My main problem is, I need everything to get started, a razor, strop, mug/soap, everything, however, I'm a college student and don't exactly have a lot of cash. So, would anybody mind telling me where I can get a good deal on a decent razor, strop and everything? Also, I haven't a clue when it comes to honing, and from what I've read nothing is really ready to use out of the box. So I wonder if anyone could hone one for me or sell me one that they've honed? I figure I may mutilate my face the first few times, but hey, nothing ventured nothing gained. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me.

Thanked: 0I'm new also and just purchased one of Tony Miller's kits with the 4-sided paddle strop. I'm extremely satisfied with everything he sent, and it's a steal at that price.

I know all too well about the good old college budget. Of course these days it's turned into the goold old college loan payback, but it's all good. Anyway, if you're looking for some items to use on the cheap and low, get a razor from a site member (do not skimp on the razor), pick up a mug and a wide unstitched leather belt. Many stores sell cheap boar bristle brushes and Williams shave soap should work just fine for starters. Check the 'el cheapo method thread for some ideas on honing cheaply. If anyone has any differring opinions or input, please feel free to correct me. But if you're looking for an inexpensive start, you can probably pull this off for under $50 instead of close to $100. The real investment is going to be in the razor.

Thanked: 0Thanks for all the info! I'll probably be making more posts when I finally do get one and take half of my face off the first time trying to shave, haha. I like the way Tony Miller's stuff looks, so I'll probably buy from him when I get the cash together, a little short on funds right now though. Thanks again!

Thanked: 0After lurking around here awhile I've sent off for one of Tony Miller's beginner kits.
Hopefully I won't end up like this guy:
