I have used a Merkur DE for about 5 years. It was a Christmas gift from an old girlfriend, and I quickly realized it was the best shave I ever had . . . until I recently discovered that people still use straight razors. I am now a hopless convert for staights but I still use the DE when I get a little shakey with the big knife. It is alot easier to bail out halfway though a shave and live to try again tomorrow.

i'm a little late chiming in but ive been using a merkur HD while my str8 is off getting shave ready (Thank you very much, Jeff!) and ive never had a shave as good as ive caught with this DE. my mustache and chin area go much easier and way smoother than my hated mach3, ive only been using merkur blades and i know the common thought is that feathers are much sharper but would you guys recommend them in general? im dying to try them and i havent cut myself yet with the DE? should the feathers be my next step or perhaps the euro gillettes, derby' or something else?

    James,

I've got both the Merkur and Feather blades. Personally, I prefer the Merkur. Maybe I got a bad "batch" of Feathers, but I was not impressed. This question will probably get more responses at ShaveMyFace or at Badger And Blade.

yeah like most things shaving it's going to come down to personal taste, so i guess there is no answer other than that theyre sharp.

someone also posted a link to a great deal on feather blades on shavemyface, 100 blades for $24 so i guess i'm skipping feeling the water with these guys and jumping right into the pool with them, tough price to pass up.

here is the link to the sale if anyone is interested.

James if you want to wait a bit, I'll toss a couple feathers in the box when I return your str8. My wife is now using feathers on her legs, so i have a good supply I'm afraid these things will make your Dovo look like a butter knife though, no matter how sharp I can get it! These feathers redefined "sharp" for me.
