    Default DE Shave

I know this isn't related to straight shaving, but I shaved last night with a DE razor for the first time since I began shaving some 32 years ago.

I almost forgot how great a shave a DE razor can provide. The equipment I used wasn't anything special, either. My grandfathers old razor and some new Meijers brand DE blades. I got super close and comfortable shave. I was really amazed that I would enjoy it as much as I did!

    Jeff,

You are right, a DE does give a very close shave. Too
bad all those guys who are currenty using a mach3 and
now the fusion will probably never discover this. As a
result they will continue to pay something like $25.00
for 8 fusion cartridges, ahd thats at Wal mart.

I'm using a Merkur Slant this week, a razor I acquired from Jeff (threeputt). It is VERY aggressive, and give an incredible close shave. This razor shows me what I need to aspire to with my straights!

I have been using a DE for a while and I love it...I just cant imagine ever getting a closer shave with anything else. Im sure in the beginning with the straight I will still have to finish off the job with the DE for a while!

There's nothing wrong with a DE. Before I started using a straight I used a Mercur Vision and it gave one outstanding shave. Not quite as close as a straight but very close.

No, nothing wrong with a DE, but I think the concern was posting about using a DE on a Straight Razor forum.

That was my concern. I should have known, having been a member here for a while, that it wouldn't stir any controversy/complaints.

I picked up DE shaving again because I'm finished with the "new" Gillette systems. So, when I'm pressed for time and can't shave with my straights, I'll shave with the DE instead of the Mach3/Fusion.

    Jeff,

You are not the only one who switches back and forth. Although this is a straight razor forum, it's the members who participate that make it what it is. I would guess that a large number of members here don't use a straight everyday, and a good number who don't use one at all, either because they don't yet have one or because they tried it for a while and it just wasn't "their bag". Regardless, I love using straights, and I enjoy the participation here.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here that doesn't use a str8 all the time. I sometimes use my 1960 Gillette Adjustable, or one of my injectors if I'm in a big hurry. I also rarely use the same cream/soap twice in a row. What can I say? I just don't like to get in a shaving rut, I guess.

Default I love my straights, too!

I rounded up the DE for the times when time was an issue. I loved it. It's been so long since I used one I forgot just how great the shave is. Having said that, I'm definitely not giving up on my straights. The DE shaves great, but the straight shaves better in my opinion. Now I've got the best of both worlds.

When I found my grandfather's old DE razor at my folks house, it was like running into an old friend...
