Thanked: 0feather razors
I have a beautiful feather razor. There's only one problem: I've carved my face every time I've shaved with it with either the superpro or proguard blades, which are supposed to cut down on nicks Has anyone else had a bad experience with these? Are there special techniques to use? I'm pretty careful with the angle of attack, and don't have nearly the same problem with my str8s. Is the problem that the shape of the edge is more acute than a str8t?
Thanks,
Chuck

The problem is that the blade is too sharp. I suggest you stop using it, but if your convinced its the deal for you practice is the key. Two ideas for you. One try using negative pressure...that is you don't even allow the blade to rest on your face. Pretend there is a cushion of air between your face and the razor. Next suggestion, try running the blade lengthwise through cork material. This will dull the blade a little and will help solve your problem.
BTW...who in the heck told you a Feather cuts down on nicks?Last edited by AFDavis11; 02-20-2006 at 10:41 PM.

Chuck,
My guess, is if you are still cutting yourself with the proguard blades, you are probably pressing to hard which is negating the effects of the safety wire.

Thanx JL, I see what you mean. I should have tried those, your right you'd have to be pressing too hard I guess. But, if a Feather touches your face it'll nick it. Protective cage or not....perfect example of whats too sharp

Probably that same internet knife store that tells us a Merkur Slant Bar (Satan's Razor) is designed for "sensitive skin". Maybe it was designed to make sensitive skin out of normal skin but not for skin that is already sensitive. <g>

I used a Feather exclusively until I got my Timor. It WILL cut you (not nick, CUT!!!) for the first couple of shaves unless you drag it across an old belt or something like that. I wouldn't use a strop because the angle of the blade is such that it'll ruin the strop - don't forget, it's not designed to be stropped.
I'll tell you this: once that sucker dulls a little, I cannot get a closer shave unless I waxed my friggin face!!! It will give me a smooth as glass shave. My beard is so damn thick that a conventional does a superb job but requires more passes and it doesn't get as close. My Timor definitely gives a more comfortable shave compared to a fresh Feather blade. As a matter of fact, I just posted on Sunday my experience about being late for a date on Saturday because I couldn't stop bleeding from shaving with the Feather.
The Feather can be appreciated if you use a light touch and you take your time. I'll continue to use mine. I also use it because it was sold to me by Ray DuPont. It's almost a tribute to him when I use it because he said he used it exclusively. If you've never spoken to Ray, you won't understand what I mean. He was my very first contact I made in this great hobby. God bless him.

Tony,
I had shave #2 today with "Satan's Razor". Shave #1 was yesterday and I started out with a Feather. Maybe I should have used a Merkur. Regardless, both shaves are beyond impressive for closeness. But today, I got major irritation. Shave #3 will be on Wednesday...I'm taking tomorrow off, and as close as today's shave is, shaving tomorrow won't matter anyway!
