    Default Anyone from UK,Scotland

Hi,been trawling the forum for a few weeks now, been interested in straight shaving for a long time, but up till now have not tried. A friend brought back from Belgium a "worldmaster" new razor and strop and I have tried for ist time with reasonable success. A few questions: I think the blade is not sharp and after reading these forums I am slightly confused to honeing. Can someone advise exactly what kind of hone I should be loking for. Norton's are not available in UK,any members point me in the right direction.

Any members from UK/Scotland? Any advise for local supplies etc.

Thanks..this board is excellent. Any help much appreciated

I don't have a good one as yet but everyone tells me Belgian Coticules are the best stones. And since Scotland is in the EU shipping shouldn't be too much on them.

Classicshaving.com probably ships to EU and they have Norton stones. Check'em out on http://www.classicshaving.com/.

    Hi,

I am in Scotland. Try www.classichandtools.com (based in the UK) for your Norton 4/8.

    Some other UK/EU suppliers

    www.toolshop.de (dovo razors)
www.dick-gmbh.de (TI razors - uner the knives section and some materials if you are into making your own scales and restoring razors)
www.shaving-and-razor-shop.com (TI, dovo and belgian coticules)
    www.shavemac.com (dovo, brushes and strops)
www.executive-shaving.co.uk (dovo, strops, brushes, soaps, creams, aftershaves etc.)
    www.gentlemans-shop.co.uk (similar to exec shaving)
    www.brisa.fi (materials for making scales/restoration)
    www.thegoodstuffshop.dk (materials for making scales/restoration)
    www.weberknives.com (materials for making scales/restoration)

Ordering from the US is not a problem (apart from having to pay Import duty), takes approx 10-14 days (would be quicker if it didn't have to go via Customs). Two sites I use are

    www.classicshaving.com
    www.billysblades.com

So far everything has arrived as ordered.

    Kiss your wallet good bye.

    Trinity,
I had a hard time sourcing a Norton stone too, but you can get them here in the UK (makes shipping easier, but can be more expensive in my opinion). To add to the above links see the following one:

    http://www.rutlands.co.uk/cgi-bin/ps...ser::1,0,0,1::

The classic handtools deal of £48.75 for a 3" norton 4000/8000 combination stone seems the best since it includes shipping in the price. If you buy from th USA don't forget that VAT is charged when packages clear through customs (17.5%), plus a clearance fee, which is charged extra on shipping by some courriers (Parcelforce charge £8); others include the clearing fee in the shipping, which costs more anyway. So the classicshaving deal for the 3" norton 4000/8000 combination stone of $74.99 would be £43.98 (@ 1 GBP = 1.70514 USD), + 17.5% VAT, + clearing charge (maybe, unless you use a more expensive courrier - which cost more anyway) of £8 . Gives a grand total of £51.68 min', or £59.68 with clearing charge (parcelforce). I know which one I would choose. With the money you save buying in the UK, buy more shaving products .

I've found that shipping to Europe/UK negates the value. For razors you're better off finding something on ebay in your region than trying for a free one from U.S.

There's a bloke on ebay that's in Germany that sells razors. I can't recall his name but even for a free razor, if you cover cost of shipping from U.S. you'll do better getting a decent razor from him. There are several good razors in the U.K. that you gents can get from ebay. I remember a thread before where Lynn mentioned that you also want to search on "cutthroat".

Here's an item # for an ebay razor in UK 6616677232.

here's an item # for an ebay razor in germany 6616819119. This one ends in 13 hours from my post here.

But do an advanced search for "straight razor" or "razor" with items located in the country of your choice.

As for sharpening, if there's no senior member from here in your area just buy a few junk razors from ebay and practice honing using the methods discussed here. It's not as nice as having a razor readily usable but it sure beats spending $30.00 u.s. shipping one way just to get a razor that's sharpened that you could have gotten for a third of the cost from your area.

USPS Airmail service ships to Europe for 5$ USD per razor... I've done that numerous times with no problems so far. I also don't pay customs, just ~1.5$ for repacking (customs checking), and it's delivered to my door...
