Although SR is not for everybody, and yes some will give it up completely, the majority will go on to get great shaves and enjoyment. Desire to succeed plays a big part IMO as well.

I suspect the quitters are able to do so with little regret as there are so many other shaving options. It's not like the golden days, when a straight was your only choice.
