Thanked: 67How many people do true ATG on the upper lip?
I've been straight shaving for several months now, and I've got to the point where the only part of my face on which I don't get an adequately close shave is my upper lip.
Like most people, my mustache hair grows down and outwards on either side of my lip.
I can do nominal WTG (downwards) and inwards (XTG) passes quite easily. This gets the shave to be quite close in that area, but a true ATG pass (Upwards, or upwards-and-in) is still beyond me.
I usually finish up with a safety in that area, as I have thick black hair that would be visible towards the end of the work-day.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So my question is: does anyone here routinely do an upwards-and-in pass on their upper lip? If so, how many of you do that?

Not I!
I like my nose attached to my face, and my skin really doesnt like the ATG pass. I get BBS ny using WTG, XTG and skin stretching.
Jockeys has a video in the Vidoes forum that shows how to make this pass though.Last edited by Stubear; 08-25-2010 at 02:07 PM.

Thanked: 90I won't do it a second time, that's for sure.
I don't know why, but shaving against the grain on my upper lip is just about impossible. The wiskers are just too damned thick, I cut myself, and I'm always afraid that I'll slice into my nose when the blade breaks free.

I do ATG everywhere except the mustache/goatee area. I do WTG and then a kind of slant wise "half" XTG. The chin I do in small patches due to the weird twists and turns, etc.
At my age, when people say "how do you shave your chin" I have to ask "Which one?"

No way Jose ! I can't do ATG on my upper lip for love nor money. I can say that with the coupe de maitre (here)and going side to side I get close and smooth. Xman has an old thread with a video showing him doing ATG on the upper lip but I can't cut it myself.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I don't do ATG anywhere.
But if you're interested in trying it out, look up "Coup de Maitre" or "Fool's Pass". Here are some threads with information and videos:

No one needs AGT .
As soon as you learn proper way to use straight razor you will never need AGT to get close shave.

At one time I didn't agree with Sham on this but I changed my mind. The celebrated 1905 pamphlet here that got me started on the cold water shave stresses that you shouldn't go ATG. According to the writer ATG is the source of shave bumps, ingrown hairs and irritation. He recommends one WTG for an acceptable result and if you want BBS go two WTG.
I have tried this and it seems to work for me. TBH most days one pass is fine for me with a bit more work on the knob of the chin and the hollows on either side of the windpipe. I guess I am blessed with soft whiskers.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
