    Gentlemen,

I did something yesterday that was as stupid as getting behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated.

I got up and had a 2 hour work related conference call, which got very heated amongst the participants. I left the call angry and distracted. Following which, SWMBO and I had a less that pleasant conversation.

Then I went upstairs to shower and shave. In the frame of mind I was in, I had no business holding a straight razor to my skin. Very bad things can happen even if you are totally on top of your game - but to shave as distracted as I was was imbecilic. I was lucky I did not cut myself.

Part of it was ego and part of it was the hope that it would relax me - which it did. But I could have been relaxing in the ER while getting stitches instead.

I could have gone to work without a shave, and it would have been a lot safer.

    Never again!

    Yours truly,
    David

Glad you didnt cut yourself mate!

I agree, its easy to cut yourself if you're distracted even with a DE, never mind a straight razor!

    Hello, David:

The way I look at your experience is that it gave you the opportunity to hone your discipline. I am not sure you took it.

I would have shut out everything from my mind, despite all the battles, and begun my shaving ritual with a pristine mind. That's difficult to do, I realize, and I don't fault you for shaving with a troubled mind. I can only assume that you viewed your task more as a challenge and a way to vent your anger rather than to calm down and relax.

Next time you face another such storm, start brushing your mind in a clear tone from the moment you enter the shower and stay with your task throughout the shave. Throw everything else out but the shaving ritual, because that's the only thing that matters. It's hard to do, yes, but it is worth the try. You'll be surprised at how well you do.

That's where the Zen comes into the world of wet shaving with the straight razor: shut everything else out and focus on the shaving ritual. Thanks for sharing your experience, my friend. Stay well.

    Regards,
    Obie

Glad you did not get cut. I was paying close attention last night and was momentarily distracted and cut myself. I am always amazed and how little pressure it takes.

Thanks Obie, your points are well taken.

I have to say I tried that very thing. And as I stated, it worked, I was relaxed at the end.

I might over time develop into a Zen master using this ritual.

But I can drain negative energy with a good book or a nice pipe of Peterson's Sunset Breeze, both of which will not cause blood loss.

Thinking about other things while shaving?! Why think of anything other than the pure pleasure it has become?

I thought you were going to stay that you got drunk and shaved with the straight!

BTW, don't do it, it's not fun, Fyi.
