Thanked: 335hekler,
Regardless of the good opinions of the others here, I agree with your assessment that you probably should be locked up somewhere for both your own good and the good of other beginning shavers who could get the notion from observing or hearing about your technique, that anything goes.
And of course it does so long as it works for the worker.
have fun and good shaving

Thanked: 433We probably all do it different.
I shave conventionally on the WTG part of my shave using both hands and "normal" grip. ATG I only use my right hand and use mine Japanese style on the side of my face that would use the left hand. This works perfectly fine for me and I get a great shave. It comes down to what makes you comfortable.

I'll be the contrary one here.
With most things in shaving you adapt to best suit you. There are a couple of things that are designed to be done a certain way. If you look at the classic shave manuals they show you the standard grip with standard razors and the reason they show that is because with that grip you have the best stability and control of the razor. Personally, I think everyone should learn the standard hold. Once you have mastered that then of course if you think an alteration serves you better then by all means do it. Of course with some razors especially the ones with the monkey tails you have to change your hold.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 240I'm glad to see at least one dissenting opinion and I guess I'll have try my hand at the standard grip again but I figure at thus stage in my straigh education it would just mess me up more usually I forgo a wtg pass but I can see using the grip if I did so maybe I will add that to my shave.

First things first. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you are getting good shaves out of the grip you are using, don't fret if it isn't the standard grip.
That said, I have a question about the grip you said you have trouble with. I tried holding my razor as you describe, and it also felt awkward and lacked the control I have with my normal grip. I hold mine like this, which gives me great control:
It sound to me like your middle finger is where my ring finger is, and your pinky finger is not being used. Have you tried it like the above pic?
However, I usually use the side grip you use when I go ATG.

Firstly I like the look of razors, they're elegant devices.
As such I like the look of jimps and notches, so for me it's a decoration thing. That said it depends for me which razor I'm using, these features are perfectly placed on some of my razors

Thanked: 240Well a picture tells a thousand words so hears three thousand words on how I hold my razor. I tried to explain my hold but dont think I really made it clear.
I dont know why the pictures came out upside down and im not smart enough to change them around but i dont think its important here. sorry for the poor quality they are simple cell pictures.
