Hi DTrain,
+1 on the Styptic Pencil as aeon said. I would also suggest getting an Alum Bloc. It tends to sting a bit but I find that for small nicks it works great.
I using a straight for a little over a year. I still get weepers and the odd nick some more serious than others. It does get better with practice.
No matter how bad the nick is, I still have a smile on my face after each shave.
Stuart.

Congrats on your first shave, and welcome to the club! The first shave is the worst, your technique is horrible and you are afraid. You will be surprised how much easier (and better!) it is the 2nd time around simply from the base experience of the first shave.
Just be patient, and take things slow. Rushing = pain with a straight.

Is that the floor shaking or just me?
The more you use the str8, the more you will improve. I remember my first. My hand wasn't shaking that bad when I started. A weeper here, a nick there. Before I was done it was like I had the DT's, and didn't even go to my neck.
I was like, "Dude, what were you thinking?" Didn't help any that when I saw my wife later in the day, she said I looked like I had been in a cat fight. I said yeah, the cat's name was Boker.
Latch on to a healthy styptic like a Col Conk or Clubman. The alum blocks are excellent too for those gushers. Just kidding. I've probably cut my ear lobes more than I have my face.
The bleeding will stop, but the comments, not so much. When you become proficient with the str8, you'll never look back. Enjoy.
