I just had the best shave of my life with a new razor...but I don't understand why...
Ok here is the drill:
I took a shower with colleens Lavender pure EO soap
then I lathered up with her Lavender EO cream.
My new razor
TAGMSC aftershave
I then used my new razor I got from Bill:
So the first thing I noticed was that this razor doesnt feel like its its cutting hair. Now keep in mind I know what a sharp blade is all my razors have been honed by Bill, John C. or Lynn. But this razor feels like its just going over my face...and hair is just falling off before it even gets there. one with the grain pass with this razor is almost as good as a with/cross/against the grain shave.
The next thing I noticed that the edge of this blade is angled its not straight and flat. The angle works with the contour of my face because the hangle that that any razoe is held is not perfectly straight.
The blade is a wedge and its heavy...maybe the heaviest blade I have used...but not by much so I dont think its the extra weight....
So ummm...why does it shave so well???

It's got a silencer on it
JL,
I'm not sure if this solves the mystery but I suspect that your new razor is sharp (I think that's the technical term.)
It's also a real beauty.
Okay, smart aleck mode off. I experience the same "I can't believe it's really cutting" phenomena with a 1/4 ground W&B. These heavy blades don't ping when cutting like the thin singing blades do. Without that familiar audible feedback, it's easy to think that nothing is happening.
At least that's my story.

Thanked: 346Sharp and stiff* seems to be the most likely explanation. My W&B frameback and some of my other heavier 7/8 and 8/8 razors are like that. You just kind of wave them around your face for a few minutes and the hair is gone.
*I used to think that heavy was also important, but I have recently discovered this is incorrect.

I have a slightly less than 1/4 hollow that doesnt even come close to this razor and a number of henckels that a 8/8 a few real heavy ones that also dont...they are hollowed though. I have often heard that wedges are more difficult to shave with...that is definitely not the case with this one.

Those heavy wedger razors are a different shaving experience than the usual hollow grind. You have no feedback with them so it seems like they aren't cutting when in fact they are. The only way to tell what they're doing while your shaving is to feel your face every now and then. Of course once you have confidence in a razor you know your going to get a great shave from it so it doesn't matter how it feels.

Thanked: 1JL...
I'm really glad you like it. Save your money. Wait 'til you see what I have coming up on the blocks here in the near future.
Part of the reason it shaves so nice is that the blade is stout. The other is the hardness and quality of the steel. I really like these older razors, myself.
It's good to see it may make a spot for one of your favorites in the shaving rotation.
One question though... won't that increase the chances of your wife spotting it? Here it comes:
"Where did you get this one? It doesn't look cheap. How much did you fork over on this one? Is this ever going to end? How can we go on vacation if you keep buying razors?"
The trick, young man, is to buy her more than you buy for yourself. Then, they can't argue. If they say, "When did you get that?", you can say right back... "Right after I spent $1,400 on your pots and pans."

Thanked: 4942Heavy wedges like this one and the old W&B's are some of the smoothest shavers out there. They are definitely different feeling. It's like the whiskers run away from them. You feel nothing but the metal and then the face is smooth.

The 7/8 W&B that I bought fro Joe is an outstanding
shaver. From the info that I can gather I believe that
it's from the 19th century. The translucent horn (cow?)
scales are cool as well.
