Quotation that got me interested in straight razors
I'm not sure where I saw this (it might well haev been here on SRP) but this quote was always at teh back of my mind when I was buying another batch of DE blades on line, and always wondering if I COULD shave with a straight razor:
If you teach a poor young man to shave himself, and keep his razor in order, you may contribute more to the happiness of his life than in giving him a thousand guineas. This sum may be soon spent, the regret only remaining of having foolishly consumed it; but in the other case, he escapes the frequent vexation of waiting for barbers, and of their sometimes dirty fingers, offensive breaths, and dull razors.
Benjamin Franklin (1886)
The idea of self-sufficiency that this hobby promises really appeals to me. As a child of the Cold War, growing up with the threat of nuclear holocaust hanging over us, things one coudl learn to do 'after the apocalypse' have always appealed to me: cooking, baking, knitting, coffee roasting, wood turning, carpentry, and now, maintaining a razor.
This way, I can be torn to pieces by radioactive zombies in a nice sweater, drinking a coffe, while eating a sandwich of home made bread out of a hand-turned wooden bowl, with a wonderfully clean shave....

I've been putting a little bit away every week planning for the proverbial TEOTWAWKI (more like rise and fall of the roman empire and subsequent dark ages) for over a decade. You know, a few cans of food here, a few tons of wheat, beans, legumes and such, and it occurred to me that I too would want to be clean shaven while facing down hordes of marauding urban zombies one 55 grain FMJ round at a time from a distance but my electric razor - which I wasn't really enjoying using anyway - would be fried in an EMP attack anyway, so I stockpiled several thousand DE razor blades, and a few dozen straight razors, some hones, strops, soaps/creams, with lots of extras for barter/trade and I'm set for anything. Cheap insurance.

Barry,
First off, welcome!
You should find many like minded folks here. I like your Franklin qoute. That it lead you here is serendipitous.
If you care to spend the time....you'll find interesting posts by guys who MAKE their own razors, tie their own flies, reload their own ammo, blend their own pipe tobacco and so on and so forth.
Here's one of my favorite self-reliancy quotes:
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.
-Robert A. Heinlein
Again, welcome!

Thanked: 1587Hello Barry. Am I missing something? Why are people welcoming you? You have over 100 posts and joined almost 3 years ago...???
I like the quote - it is pretty much the "give a man a fish...." proverb rejiggered and expanded for shaving, and that has always been one of my favourite sayings.
James.
EDIT: Here's the quote that got me interested in straight razors: "I would sooner fail than not be among the greatest." John Keats.Last edited by Jimbo; 12-22-2011 at 07:22 PM.
