    Default wierd?

I have been shaving with a straight for about 6 months now and had to pick up a shavette due to time constraints of honing and stropping ( wife is in school in texas for a few months making me Mr. mom) anyway, so I get the shavette load a brand new blade in it last night to try it out and had the best shave ever! I have 2 straights, 1 is the plain cheap Dovo with the black resin handle and the other is the dovo diamant which came honed. I thought I had been doing a pretty decent job at honing since it passed the hh test after honing, but I get all lathered up it seems like my beard is kryptonite to the razors.

Is it wierd that I get a way better shave with a shavette than a regular straight? Everything I have read says that a straight should cut better and smoother than a shavette, but I couldn't believe the difference.

Try having the straights honed by someone who you are 100% confident can get the job done, and then compare again.

Many guys will make honing, stropping, or other mistakes with their first shave-ready razor, and by the time their technique is improved enough to get a good shave, the edge is no longer there. (Early shaves are usually subpar because of shave technique.) Often, this deterioration of the edge is not considered, and new members think their first razor was not honed properly.

When you match a great edge to your improved technique, you can do a real shave-off.

The diamant came from straight razor designs already honed. I didnt touch it before using it to shave with and even it was no match. It seems like there was always a pulling with the blades. It was probably poor technique to start with which is totally on me, but even so it seems like the shavette was 100% better.

Remember a straight & a shavette require slightly different technique. Even stropping can be a -ve influence at first.
Just use the disposable as a goal to reach. Your honing & shaving skills will get there in time .

The Shavette can certainly be sharper than a regular straight, especially with Feather blades. From there, the differences will lie in your technique.

I agree!! The first time I switched from a shavette to a straight, I thought there was something wrong with my straight razor because I had to do two passes instead of just one to get the same closeness as I did with a shavette.

Sometimes it just happens this way. Somedays I get a superior shave from a DE, somedays it's from a straight. The only explanation I can offer is that sometimes everything comes together and you get a fantastic shave, regardless of the razor you are using. Also consider that you've been at this for a bit less than 6 months (presumably) which really isn't that much time for refinement in the scheme of things. It's bound to get better before it gets worse. Who knows, in another 6 months you may be posting that your shavette shaves are lousy compared to using your real straights
