Thanked: 5i am just starting out like you. i have hit myself in about the same spot. make sure your blade angle isnt too steep. use short strokes and try using different parts of the blade. i.e. dont try to use the middle of the blade it that exact spot. maybe use the heel....maybe use the toe......i lean toward the the toe right aroung that place. sometimes i thin the lather out a little so i can see what i am doing. dont get excited, the blade is there to help you not hurt you. if you are worried about getting cut you will. if your tense you will. learn what the blade can and cant do in that place.

I really appreciate this thread, as I have trouble with the same spot, only on the left side. I've only made progress by creative skin-stretching, and short shallow strokes. I'm going to use some of the advice in this thread.
Cheers,
Jack

I'm a newbie too (eight months), but I noticed early on that if I nicked myself, I would reopen the wound each time if I shaved the spot with the blade parallel to the cut (in other words, holding it at the same angle as I did when I first cut myself). I found that if I held the blade perpendicular to the cut (or nearly so) and shaved across it, the shave wouldn't be as close, but it wouldn't reopen the cut. After it healed I could go back to shaving ATG.

Thanked: 1587The same spot, assuming it is not because you are just reopening an old wound, could indicate several things, but the main one would be technique. Try changing it up a little - for example, use your left hand instead of the right, or whatever.
The other thing that might be happening is the old "fixate on the obstacle" issue they teach you about at driving or motorcycle schools. Sometimes fixating on an issue can be the very reason it occurs.
But you are only 3 weeks in. There is plenty of time, so don't worry at it too much. Before you know it you'll be nicking yourself all over your face like the rest of us!

It's hard to explain in words, Somebody mentioned a guillotine stroke earlier and I second that.
You can still go ATG on that spot, but instead of attacking the hair at 90 degrees you could adjust your angle of attack and change to an heel or toe leading stroke. It just needs to be a 15 or 20 degree change, but the angle your blade is meeting your 'trouble spot' would be totally changed.
It might help,
If that didn't make any sense just let me know and I'll show you what I mean tomorrow.Through the mud and the blood, to the green fields beyond.

Thanked: 116After trying out some new blade strokes and face stretching techniques, I've managed to have my first nick free shave! Thanks to everyone for their advice. Also, it was my first shave with my new 1920's Boker King Cutter that I honed myself; also my first ever hone!

Awesome job man!
Always feels good to shave with a blade that you have honed yourself.Through the mud and the blood, to the green fields beyond.
