Thread: Switching Hands

I learned to use my left hand right from the outset. I watched videos of those using both hands, and those using just the one, but using both gives more flexibility and convenience. I was amazed how quickly it all came together. If you want to do it, then you will learn. Nothing is impossible.

Gentlemen:
I switched hands from the first shave and am glad I did. The right is my dominant hand, so I had to train my left. Using it as much as possible to accomplish the mundane daily tasks helped considerably — brushing my teeth, opening doors, cabinets, and so on. Eventually using my left hand for such tasks became a habit. Today the left hand works just as well as the right for the daily shave. There's nothing wrong with using the dominant hand. No, of course, not. On the other hand, the Lord gave me two hands and I might as well use them for the the straight razor shave — one of life's great pleasures.

Only my right knows how to shave. Lefty only knows how to stretch.
Thus saith the Lord, "....let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth...."

Thanked: 67I'd like to retract what I said last time this subject came up - that I'd never be able to trust my left hand with a sharp object.
I found that I couldn't get certain spots right only using my right (dominant) hand, so about 5 months into straight shaving I've started to use my left as well. I'm very non-ambidextrous, but it hasn't been as hard as I thought it would be - although I've nicked myself a bit more with the left hand as I've started to use it. It is getting better though.
From what I read it seems I do it the other way round to most people - I find it easier to use the right hand for the left half of my face, and the left hand for the right half. Different strokes, eh?

What found helpful was using my left hand for both sides on easy areas to shave then using the right for the areas that needed finer control. Then as I gained confidence with my left I used it for more complex parts.

I started off early with the left hand for the left side as well. I did it mainly the way I trained my right hand. First, all I did was one swipe from side-burn to jaw-line. As I got more confident, I did more and more with the left hand. I still have some things I do cross-handed, but my ATG stroke on the right side neck is actually easier to do with the left hand. I have a mustache/goatee so some of the hardest stuff, I don't do at all, but I have found incorporating the off-hand to be helpful and worth the patience it takes to learn.
