OK, to clear up any confusion, I didn't fix my Dovo best quality razor right away, as I had two other professionally honed vintage razors. I am not saying to try your hand at honing a messed up razor just yet. I used my other two razors until I got more razors in and then after a couple months using said razors honed by pros I started my foray into honing.

It was three months in when I fixed my Dovo!
"Charlotte meetup," lets shoot for April 13-14 or 20-21. What say you? PM me to get the ball rolling! And may your face always be BBS!

Send it off! Part of repairing any razor is being able to set a good bevel and the odds against that happening on your first hone with only a finishing stone are astronomically high. Plus being new to straight shaving you'll have a tough time distinguishing a tolerable edge from an excellent edge. It's generally recommended to wait until your more experienced at shaving before learning to hone. I'd recommend sending it to Lynn, Glen (gssixgun) or back to hart for a professional repair & if you still wish to start honing early buy a second razor, a norton 4x8 & put the 12k away until your getting good shaves from the 4x8.

That's my opinion anyway. It and a buck 50 might get you a cup of coffee at the gas station

I dinged one against the faucet my first week. Now I have 8 & a feather artist club I got for emergencies. I guess it'd be a pretty big emergency for me to need it now

Can't poke at your deftness, I've done the same thing. Minor nick though, I shaved with it too & it was fine. Eventually I sent it away for a honing/repair, & it came back just like new.

Send it to someone who has dealt with these issues before and be sure to send a pic so they know what they are dealing with and can advise you appropriately. As a matter of fact it would be good to see you post a pic in the thread.

To give you some idea, it took me about 20 minutes to repair this:

I then had to hone it as I'd blunted the edge in the process. The point is, the repair was done on a low number hone with no damage to the hone

Wow! Thanks everyone for your input. I tried to hone the razor and had some good success but nothing like UKRob's job. I think I'll keep trying to round it off and if I screw it up more I'll send it out.

I did have my 2nd shave with the razor and I felt a little more razor drag but I think that maybe because of my newbie honing job.

I'll keep everyone appraised of my dilemma.

    Thanks again.

I hang a facecloth over the faucet when shaving to prevent accidental bumps.

No worries. On my 20th shave or so, I dropped the razor from my right hand and as I jerked back and up to get out of the way, I accidentally caught the edge of it with the end of my index finger on my left hand. It pinged as the leverage of the razor coming *out* of my finger strummed the edge, a very disgusting feeling.

But no razor damage fortunately, on a razor that to me is irreplaceable. It happens to all of us. In a month or two, you'll never drop one again, or very rarely. The great thing about shaving is that even if you just keep doing it without pressing yourself and overexamining, you'll probably get good results and naturally avoid doing things that have bad outcomes.

Btw...I always shave with one hand, too, and get fantastic comfortable shaves. Whatever you learn to do, if you stick with it, you'll get good shaves.
