    Default ATG first success

Well, after a number of weeks shaving daily with a straight I finally decided to give ATG another bash for the second time. This time though I watched a few videos focusing on what I struggled with my first time (read grip ).

So a second attempt at ATG and a first for a full 3 pass shave. Worked a treat! Very happy with the results, there is room for improvement but for a first try I was pleased. Pretty smooth all over especially the spots that didn't quite shave as well when I only went WTG.

HOWEVER … I did have one issue that I am keen to get advice from the more seasoned members, I struggled to improve the shave of the (point?) of my chin. Basically where the jaw line is but just the chin area, where it changes from the front of your face to rolling in under your neck, I seem to have a line of beard just along that ridge that didn't get as smooth as the rest. So any tips on what to do? I am guessing it is just getting the right blade angle over that change in direction, is this right? Or is there more to it?

    TIA

    Luke

Did you try that part of your face with XTG?

Sometimes WTG, followed by XTG and than finished with ATG gives a good result. It surely gives me the preferred smoothness.

I attempted it … Not sure if I would call it success but I didn't cut myself!

Any chance you could post the links to the videos (assuming they are online videos!)?

I'm sure they may end up being very useful for others here too

Sure Can (at work at the moment ) but I will put them up when I get home … If you search YouTube for 'Geofatboy' though and watch his 3 pass shave that is basically what I copied with slight variations in grip for my comfort, but got the basics off that video.

You can alleviate that problem by stretching your skin upwards toward your nose and/or downward toward your neck while shaving it. This way you are not trying to shave right along that ridge

I lean my head back as far as I can and pull my bottom lip into my mouth.
This allows the jawbone to slide under the 'problem' area and make it as flat as possible.
I also pay a lot of attention to the blade angle here too.
    I hope this helps
Hang on and enjoy the ride...

OK, took onboard everything that everyone posted, and gave the 3 pass another go tonight before work.

Definitely an improvement! Not BBS yet but far better along that trouble line that last night.

I did a few things differently.
    (1) I tried to get an even better XTG in that area to help out on the final pass.

    (2) I got that skin stretched and tried to raise it up off the "jawline" so that I wasn't shaving on an edge but rather a flat plane of my face.

    (3) Definitely had more confidence and control over the blade in that area so it was more comfortable and I could focus on small angle changes to the blade to help cut.

A bit more practice and I think I will be getting the BBS off ATG which will be nice. The rest of my face I am very happy with the results.

For those that want it this is the link to the video I watched

I use the kamisori style grip he mentions for my ATG pass, I seem to be more comfortable with that grip, however I did find that it helps allot control wise to keep your elbow high while doing this (mine is almost level with my shoulder) I found I could control the blade angle much better and also grip the tang with "lighter" fingers so that if the blade did catch I would have less chance of forcing it through.

Thanks again for your help guys
    - much appreciated.

Watch how this fellow goes over his chin while changing the blade angle:

The fellow in the above clip goes over areas dry, and that always gives my skin fits. I wouldn't recommend going over areas after you shave the lather and fur away.

The way I get a nice smooth chin is by focusing more closely on the XTG pass in that area. When you DO go ATG, there is less stubble left to hang up the blade and cause a divot!

I had trouble getting the front of my neck earlier, but found that tilting my head back and going diagonally upward caught them all and cleaned them off.
