Two bits- my first experience
I have mentioned Sinners and Scissors, a local barber, a few times but I had not been there before. That has changed. I signed up for the haircut and shave, $40. I have been a little hesitant to pay that much for things that I do myself. It was worth it. Melissa spent a little over an hour on the haircut, shave, massage (face and neck), and clean up. The shave consisted of hot lather, hot towel, oil (or water) and another hot towel for a minute or two before the shave. She used a Dovo shavette and spot shaved. Lots of micro movements around the whiskers I wanted to keep. Measuring, double-checking, etc was frequent, however the moves were confident and precise. The result is the best shave and shave experience I have had. I feel more "man-scaped" than I ever have, but I suppose that is what you get with high-end quality and personal attention (and no parafin hand wax thing like I've had at another "man's salon," which I appreciated skipping).
Inside was filled with great barbering art and antiques. I particularly enjoyed the homages to barbering history- the pole, leeches, teeth, straight razors, DEs, etc.
Long story short- after the experience I feel that it was a bargain and easily worth my two bits (+ inflation).

Thanked: 1263Good to know there's still "barbers" out there that take the time.
Reminds me of this place... hawlewyoods had the pleasure of getting a cut from Donnie himself a few years back at a tattoo convention...flawless.
I was lucky enough to find a local barber that is actually a true barber, not a "hair dresser", that does a fantastic job. She finishes with a shave cream and straight to clean up the edges and neck and usually finishes it off with Pinaud Clubman...all for $19

$40 for a shave and a haircut is one heck of a deal.

I was thinking of getting a barber shave to compare it to my own work. Most barbers around here don't have shaving on the menu. I found a specialty shop nearby, base price for a shave, $90.
The tale is doon, and God save al the rowte!

Thanked: 3I have seen quite a few places popping up that are old school barbers, surprisingly the barbers are younger but have a good touch. My favorite barber shop charges 36 bucks for cut and a shave and they use a traditional straight

I like the idea of the traditional straight, but understand the concerns with hygiene, time (honing, etc) that are counter-productive. Maybe when I go back I'll bring up the diner mug concept. Perhaps pay a certain fee and you get to keep your own razor on premises to be shaved with.
I expected about a half-hour treatment and mediocre results but was definitely impressed with the time, quality and relative value.
