Thanked: 8Fun to read but be aware that the Sacramento Union went out of business a couple of decades ago. Still...I don't suppose that means they didn't use to give good advice.

Yeah, I read sawing and thought, uuhh ouch! Been there, done with that! It was the reference to sloping that made me think scything or guillotine.
I shave because I want to, not because I have to!

Im gonna try leaving soap on a cheap brush and see. Ill only wet the soap prior to shaving without soaking the brush. Barbers dont soak the brush first ya know?
As for stropping at an angle, Afdavis just posted a thread in the stropping forum and it is interesting.

The Experiment Begins!!
After shaving with MWF, with a touch of Musgo, I just kinda wiped the excess from the brush to leave it a bit skinnier to hang it up. Although this is probably my cheapest brush, it's probably my favorite, I love this thing!! I can't really see that what I'm doing will screw it up though. I'll try this for a week of shaves, we'll see what happens!!

I started this morning by shaving with some tabac and then leaving the brush in a mug. The brush was LOADED with soap as if I threw it down mid shave.
Tomorrow when I shave, no soaking the brush, just wetting the puck of soap again.
I will continue this for a week.

My pictures belie how much lather is in the brush, it too is packed, I just drew it through a circle like an OK sign with my fingers to get it skinnier. I normally shave every other day, but I'm wondering if, for research purposes, I should go to every day? Also, my brush is hanging up, I'll keep it like that throughout for controlled results.

Im very interested to see your findings. The brush Im using is a cheap bristle brush from crabtree and evelyn. I just threw it in a mug with soap. Hahaha

I'll be in for doing it again. I will use a horse hair brush since it looks like we got all the other main hair types.
I will use an arko stick and face lather. I will only wet my face and a few drops of water on the brush. Then add water as needed to build good lather.
Here is it after today's shave
I will say this I tried today using arko like how I plan on using it for this experiment and was very impressed with how easy it was to build a lather.

Day two for me and found that you have to wet the brush enough to rehydrate the soap in it or you will end up with a lot of soap snow.
Lather did seem to come together quicker. Didn't real notice much of difference otherwise.

I decided to go with Williams. I just dipped the brush in a glass of water and took it to the mug of soap that had been soaked in water. Lather whipped up extra fast, like it had a jump start from already being in the brush. It was a bit dry, but just kept adding water and it whipped up the best Williams lather I have ever used. Rather than hang it up, I just dropped the brush back into the mug, lather and all. I haven't shaved yet today, I'm not used to every day shaving and yesterday seemed a little brutal, not enough to shave and just like I kept going over the same spots that are my usual problem spots. I may skip today.
