Oh Heck! I gotta try that! I'll die of curiosity if I don't. Besides, it's written in the paper, that means it's true and trusted as fact, right?

It's one of those things that comes up a bit and I did do it with an omega boar brush. Not sure how it helps with anything but softening a brush up some. If the idea was to save lather it really doesn't work as you need to wet the brush next time to use it. .

Let us know how it goes. And maybe spare the silvertips on the experiment.

I have been heating my razors with hot water prior to shaving and have noticed a difference in how soft/smooth my hollow ground blades feel. I will need to try the cold water trick though!

The left-over lather may have been to prevent a bug infestation or prohibit mold growth. I am not sure but that sure seems plausible considering the time this article was written.

And, is it just me or does the shaving motion discussed here as sawing seem similar to the guillotine motion discussed in the advanced shaving techniques in the wiki?

Very cool, very interesting article. It almost raises more questions than answers in spite of the title!
I shave because I want to, not because I have to!

I would think so on the shaving motion. Although, a sything motion would be a better choice over a sawing motion. I picture sawing as a back and forth, yeah, I've done that to a small degree on accident with bad results. You can tell it was written in a time when care of tools was very important, there were no ifs ands or buts regarding taking care to clean your razor!
