It's a less common shape in pressed horn, it's kind of a subtle S curve. If they were put on upside down the curved part near the pivot gets too high at the tang.
edit: or at least, that's what I think, and that's how I found the scales originally. The blank panel on the back side has me wondering, as any kind of panel for ornamentation / name / whatever is usually on the side with the maker's mark.Last edited by ScienceGuy; 09-04-2013 at 09:28 PM.

Yes, in that regard the fanciest side is up front! Sort of an inverted gunstock. Either way, A handsome piece!
