    Unikat

Thanks, my Mother's side of the family was from the Hamburg area so that would explain it.

That is one beautiful find Unikat. I have always wanted that particular Puma model as it is the most beautiful of the Puma line up. Enjoy and welcome to our forum.

    Welcome to SRP.

That's a rather nice set, but since it's not matching I think you want to send me those odd 78s, especially the one that doesn't even use proper german

From your pictures the sizes seem the same though, are the 78 different from the 77? It wouldn't be unusual, I think I had (may be still do) the exact same model and number in two vastly different sizes, like 4/8 and 7/8, but I don't remember if that was dovo or puma.

Following my opinion, 78 and 77 use exactly the same blade (put one over the other and could not see any difference). Sizes vary all over the set about 1mm, and you cannot say 78 is larger then 77. The 78 are inscripted 5/8, for me its 6/8 (see the picture), but i know this from older TIs. Afaik, the 77 is build between 1930 and 1940, the 78 may be the succession model. The only difference i can see: the black in the etching seems to be more intensive.

In my opinion the special thing about this set is that it comes from this early period (and of course the Puma Gold blades used). As far as i know, neither PUMA nor other german manufacturers build 7 day sets during this times (please tell me, If I'm mistaken). I think, an german gentleman made his own 7 day set following the british example and proved very good taste choosing the Puma Gold blade.

By the way, the paper on the scales says: "Der ungewöhlich zarte Schnitt des Puma Messers beruht darauf, dass der Stahl 2 mal geschmiedet - durchgehämmert wird." means: "the unusual mild/tender cut of the Puma blade is based on the fact, it`s twice forged - hammered."

However, there's still a lot of work in restoring this 7 day set, so I decided to find good new home for the set with an enthusiastic collector who has the necessary experience to do that. Today, i will know, wether we come together or not

Wow, I find it hard to believe that you would give up a set like that. That is surely a once in a lifetime find. If the set was sold I hope you find something very nice to replace it.

Thank you very much for sharing the photographs with us. I enjoyed the language lesson too
