Oh boy. The seller didn't advertise this as new, clean or 'shave ready', but they also didn't show the amount of rust or the blade nicks. The blade looks seperate to the frame, but it also looks rusted in.

Has anyone got any hints and/or advice to get this into a useable (pristine condition isn't necessary) state?

It has very good steel and may well be a good shaver. Do a good job of sanitizing it! The remaining rust will hold some stuff for a long time.
Watch you angle when you shave with it, it will surprise you more than once with the thin blade width.

One good thing about framebacks among others is you know they can be honed. Unlike some wedges that you cant tell until you put er on the hone.

I've read your various posts on framebacks. Was there ever a frameback variety that weren't meant to have their blades removed? The one I have has no screw keeping the blade in place, and it's definitely a separate blade... but I'm not going to risk yanking it apart if it weren't meant to be removed.

Actually most framebacks were never meant to come apart once put together.

Most of them did not no do they now. The screw type removable blade was invented by J. Lecoultre in the 1880s and many different styles came from that type.

Thanks for the feedback. That saves me possibly ruining a 120+yr old razor.
