Henckels 60 1/2
Acquired this a little while back in fantastic condition. I am tempted to just hone it up.
I have never
seen a spine like this before. Does anyone know the purpose of this design?

I am clueless. Does it still have the correct angle for honing?

Ohhh yeah! I have a 60. Total wedge. Some say a guard went over the spine, I dunno.
What I DO know is it has been a mainstay of my rotation for 6 years or so and shaves the dickens. It will be altered a bit wedge and pin-wise and find it's way into my Henckels 7 day set soon!Last edited by sharptonn; 12-03-2013 at 02:57 AM.

HA!, Thanks, Josh! You are welcome here anytime! (We will have a meet in Jan???)
The thing is something I did a long time ago and ,as I learned to hone, I got it going so good, so easy, it has been awesome to own. I don't like the red wedge, nor the pins (anymore), so that will be changed. It is the inspiration for a set I am building slowly : http://straightrazorpalace.com/custo...46-2-14-a.html. Henckels made the widest variety of any German maker and more than most English ones in their vintage razors. Good steel, perfect grinds. Each with it's own personality! I think the razor at top here is a bit more narrow, the same grind. It should be a stellar shaver! Nice find, they are not making them any more!Last edited by sharptonn; 12-03-2013 at 03:42 AM.

Thinking about the why, would this configuration give a 4/8 blade a 5/8 feel in the hand?

My first impression was that it takes a guard like Sharptonn says - at least all the other frame backs and "guards" that I've taken apart look like that sans-guard. In any case it's a pretty blade!

If I understand what you're saying... My thinking is "yes". I feel the same way about some frame backs and even some swaybacks. They "feel" wider than they really are... My thoughts are that the downward displacement of the bevel creates the illusion that it's wider than it measures. You really don't finger the spine much at all so when the edge touches your face it's normally about where a larger blade would be in relation to your fingers - if that makes sense. If not, it's after 2 am and I really need some sleep!
I had a wild French blade that dropped even more than that a few years ago, but sold it because I could never get comfortable with it. It had a drop much more severe and felt just like a 15/16 or 8/8, but was light as a feather - and was a 5/8! Just couldn't adjust to it.Last edited by AirColorado; 12-04-2013 at 10:34 AM.
