so should I not even worry about filing the head of the pin down first? Or should I file it down to see the actual pin Before using the pin vise?

Punch a hole in two layers of masking tape, apply over the pinhead,File it flat, than use a pinvise to slowly go thru the pin until the head comes off.
Than press the pin out carefully,DO NOT use a punch and hammer.

I've never used oil. Not enough surface ft/min when drilling with a pin vise to worry about it.

That's what I always do is punch holes through 2-3 layers of masking tape & put it over the pin.

I have melted some collars into some scales without it. It doesn't hurt to use it just in case. Its a difficult to remove the collars once they are embedded in the scales.

Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
