New acquisition!

Found a decent looking razor at an antique shop for cheap so I picked it up. It's a Joseph Rogers & sons, which I've heard are pretty good shavers. Not sure the age on it, but it looks pretty old and has minimal hone wear. Here are a few pics I took of it...forgive the tape, working on getting it honed up!

Perhaps some of you out there might know what the scales look to be made of. When I picked it up, I initially thought a dark wood, such as ebony...but the more I look at it in better light, it makes me wonder. Has some silvery streaks in it and it's a very tight grain pattern...almost like strands of hair joined together. The pic with my fingers in it shows the silvery tones the best.

My guess, which is a wild one, would be horn, maybe?

If you have never tried a Joseph Rodgers & Sons before you are gonna love it. Hone 'er up well and enjoy! I have 9 Joseph Rodgers & Sons, love 'em all and won't part with a single one.....best shaving Sheffield's I've tried!

I have one complete set like that. They are horn. Most of the get broken as they age and get brittle, those ones just got cooler. It's an effect that I have not been able to even remotely duplicate no matter gown crazy of stuff I do to the horn.

I wondered if maybe it was horn, but since I didn't know for sure what the grain looked like with horn, I didn't want to mention it. From what I could tell, it was wood like, but just didn't look like wood.

Yup, agree with er'ybody else. Horn scales. Neats foot oil soak for 24 hours will rejuvenate those babies.

Very nice...just had and posted my SOTD using one of a matched pair of J Rodgers and Sons, yes, they are superb razors, you'll definitely enjoy it. Your looks like another example of some of the interesting shapes they have for their blades...great looking razor.

So neatsfoot foot oil? Don't think I have enough for a soak...maybe just a rub? On a side note, I think I got it shave ready last night. This evening will be the test shave with it to see how it does...wish me luck!

Any idea where I can pick up neatsfoot oil? All I have is the small pack I got from whipped dog one time. Also, can I soak the whole razor, or do I need to remove the scales? Never done that before and not sure I have the right tools for it.
