These are two of nine razors that were my great granddads. They havebeen stored in a steamer trunck sinc his death in an auto accident in June 1936. Hope to start using them soon.

Wow, 9 razors What a treasure! When you have them honed, use them with respect. I'm sure that your great grandfather would be proud knowing that you are using tools that he'd spent hard earned money for and had cared for so carefully knowing that with care, they would last many a lifetime beyond his.

Rob, my Scoutmaster gave me his Father's, brother's and brother in laws straights and none had touched a hone nor a strop in over 50 years and with a good stropping All would shave, not the greatest shave but very decent.
All had been stored dry with no oil. So it is quite possible that with a good stropping, they are still sharp enough to shave.
With that said, I'd strop and see, but to get the best shave I'd have them honed. Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdin’s cave of 'stuff'.

Thanked: 3224That is a very good find. Most people would be lucky to have and use one heirloom razor so having nine is a great stroke of luck. Treasure them.

Thanked: 3795I have given this advice many times but here goes again.
Unless you already have experience with straight razors, do not use your family heirlooms for practice for learning shaving, honing, or restoration. The likelihood of breaking one or more of them is too high.
Buy a decent shave ready razor from the SRP classifieds or from someone you trust and learn with that. Keep your Grandad's razors safe!

Thanked: 3795If you'd like, you could add your razors to THIS thread.
I find it amazing that the contents of the steamer trunk were kept intact for so long. You've got a family time capsule there.

Thanked: 228That is absolutely awesome. What a catch. Keep them safe? Yes, but they are meant to be used. At least a few anyway. Wow!
