    That was the USS CONNECTICUT, BB-18, doing her sea trials prior to being part of the "Great White Fleet" that US sailed around the world to show off our Battleships and sea power.

    She was launched on the 29th of Sept, 1904, and commissioned 29 Sept, 1906. Sold for scrap in 1923.

    Beautiful ship she was and yes I rather imagine that the "black gangs" were shoveling mightily.

    I bet the guys in the small boat taking that pic had a wild ride shortly after the pic was taken. Those old Tumblehome hulls moved some water. Not very efficient but they sure looked good.
