Early 1800s Gavet in MOP
From the wild of the internet I picked this one up recently, and it's probably the topper of my collection so far. I'm assuming it's from Charles Gavet, cutler to the King in 1814 (rather than his father François-Charles Gavet), at 138 Rue St.-Honoré in Paris. The scales are solid MOP, and there's a lot of gold on the razor, from the endcap to the scale inlays to the chasing on the blade itself (all writing and the fleur-de-lis that run around the spine). I minimally and carefully cleaned the active rust off of the blade, bringing it to its former glory. Interestingly, the tail is a separate piece to the blade (permanently attached) in a different metal, but I'm not sure what metal it is. Whatever it is, it is gilded.

You always come up with some fascinating stuff, but this one is, as you said, in a class by itself.

Wow, a 200-year old razor, and obviously a high-falutin' one at that! Not that I'll ever own one like that, but if I did, I might just shave with it once or twice to say I did, then carefully store it away.
