Apparently ox bone is the closest thing to ivory without being ivory, and has been common in use. I would like to find a source for ox bone but my sources tell me that they are used for high end majong and other game pieces and are very hard to get.
Yup, agreed - I've got a few razors that I swore up and down were ivory until I knew for sure what the real thing was.

I actually purchased a razor that stated ivory scales, then looking closer, and knowing what to look for, one scale was in fact ivory and the other was celluloid(was a tad thicker), was very hard to tell the difference between the two, one had obviously been replaced. I let the seller know, there was no way for him to have reasonably known either (wasn't a razor seller), but there' the usual giveaways of pins/collars, thickness, and the other is the shape of the scales at the pivot end.

Ivory or tortoise scales are usually shaped a certain way at the pivot end, and the one's in the OP are rounded, which is another tell tale sign of celluloid, but agreed, there are some magnificent replica ivory scales.

Notice the pivot end scale shape and the brass liner to protect the scales:

I like the idea of the brass liner at the pivot. Great idea for ivory.
    It's just Sharpening, right?

That is a nice set! Once honed up I am sure they will be great shavers I have two 7 days sets and am in the process of restoring one of them right now. Yours doesn't require much work from the looks of it and will be a great addition to your collection!

Thanks so much sixgun for showing me what a razor is suppose to be like .

I'm glad that my offer to have the razor honed for you N/C has been helpful for you. I'm pleased that you found the edge nice/Glen said it was a really nice razor to hone and that it took a really nice edge. Now you only have 6 more razors to have honed and your set is ready for a long time

When the time comes, please remember to pass it forward or pay it back in what ever form you can as that way others will be able to enjoy shaving with a straight just as you have.
