Neither. The blade attaches to a bar that rides on rails that move back and forth to hone on the stone that comes with the kit. You go one way then it automatically flips over when you go back the other way. Same thing for using the strop side. Just watch it when flipping because it can slap the blade one the hone pretty hard.

Thanked: 3795I think you missed the point of his question, which was regarding honing OFF the device.
Yes, you need to tape the spine to match the bevel angle formed by the device.

Thanked: 3795Use a good quality electrical tape. Change it whenever you see wear. If it leaves any residue on the blade, use the sticky side of the tape you just pulled off to dab off the residue. Start with one layer of tape and use a marker test to see where the marking is removed on the bevel. If it is not cutting to the edge, then try adding a second layer of tape.
Also, for these blades, extend the tape a couple inches past both ends of the blade. This will allow you an easier way to grip the blade. I suppose that I should point out that honing off the device is only of benefit if you need to do repair work on the blade or if you are trying to hone on something more fine than the hone that comes with the Rolls.
Welcome to SRP! Have you used your Rolls Razor yet? Do you have any other razors, DE or straights?

Thanked: 379560 razors!!! You might have a problem, so you'll be fine here.
It's hard to recommend anything better than a razor made by Ralf Aust if you are looking for new. Alternatively, keep an eye out for the razor section of the Buy/Sell/Trade. There have been a lot of great razors in there lately. You also will need a strop.

Man, I have one with a blade honed by Bayamontate. Amazing.
This little strop does not do it justice.
Gonna pull it down my Lipshaw strop with my fingers tomorrow!
