Thread: I think it will clean up?

I saw this one on the bay and think it might clean up and sand out OK. If it doesn't nothing ventured nothing gained. Sheffield 6/8 I believe there bone. The pits I hope aren't as bad as they seem. Anyway it's cold and this will give me something to do.

Just from the looks of it I really don't think it's been honed. If so and the dark spots aren't too deep they should sand out. At least that's the plan. If the scales are bone which i think they are I'll put a little of oil on them for a day or two so they may not be too brittle when I remove the hinge pin. The razor oil I have from SRD should do the trick as long as I don't over do it.

Saw this one and like it, I can't tell without seeing better pictures if it's reground or if it's just not been used much. Looks like it will clean up great.

This one came today and it's really in better shape than expected. I'll remove the blade and clean it up . From what I can see it's not been honed and the scales are in very good shape.

Even though these scales have collars on the pins and at first look they seem to be bone but after removing the blade and cleaning the dirt with soft scrub and brillo pad I'm begining to think may be ivory. I use 2.0 readers plus 5 mag glass I can see nothing about them to say there bone. The blade has a few very small pits around the hinge pin and a few dark spots on the blade it's self but nothing that want sand out I think. It's a near wedge. Too thick to be 1/4 hollow . I may have gotten lucky.

You have bone, IMO. And very lucky. Take care with it!

Right now it's soaking in Polident over nite . the same stuff I soak my dentures in. I cleaned them up with what was mentioned before and now to finish with the over nite. The blade I am hand buffing and or cleaning with 220 320 400 600 800 1200 and at last 2000 grit wet dry.. after that I'll polish with green knife makers ruge. If this turns out OK I'll box it up with the razor that looks like it and keep them as may be a pair to us on a weekly set.
